Verse 1
             G
The wind was cold and thin
                     Bm
Out on the highway's edge
  C
A solitary figure
G D
 With a solemn pledge
           G
One leg of bone, one leg of steel
       Bm
A skip and a heavy heel
              C
Brought up in BC and Manitoba
          G D
He didn't fail to make us feel

Chorus
          C G D G
Yeah, the road was long where he once ran
C G D Em
He did the best any human can
     C G D Em
Get across the country, that's the plan
C D G
That's the spirit of our man

Verse 2
   G
He didn't run for medals
   Bm
He didn't run for gold
            C
But for the people and their stories
     G D
That never will be told
           G
Across the asphalt and the gravel
Bm
Through the heat and rain
                       C
He carried the nation's weight for twenty-six miles
G D
 Then he'd go again

Chorus
          C G D G
Yeah, the road was long where he once ran
C G D Em
He did the best any human can
     C G D Em
Get across the country, that's the plan
C D G
That's the spirit of our man

Verse 3
          G
Well, the road was lined with people
         Bm
Who came out to see him run
                   Em
But the lungs grew tired and he got weary
  C
Before he was done
     G
On a lonely stretch
Bm
  Near Thunder Bay
C
 His stride was halted
    D
The body gave way

Chorus
          C G D G
Yeah, the road was long where he once ran
C G D Em
He did the best any human can
     C G D Em
Get across the country, that's the plan
C D G
That's the spirit of our man

Verse 4
           G
The finish line was in his mind
      Bm
Not a city on a map
             Em
There was no closing ceremony
C
Just a roadside clap
              G
He might have had to stop the run
        Bm
But the fight still carries on
          Em
For every heart that followed him
    C D
The race was bravely won

Chorus
          N.C.
Well, the road was long where he once ran
N.C.
He did the best any human can
N.C. D Em
Get across the country, that's the plan
C D G
That's the spirit of our man

Outro
         C D
If there ever was a hero
         G D/F# Em
If there ever was a saint
       C D
He ran through fire and through pain
    G D/F# Em
Any lesser soul would faint
        C D G
He said it's a mission greater than himself
        G D Em
And his words are still ringing true
N.C. G
He ran for everybody
D G
And he ran for me and you
