Get Up And Use Me

Fire Engines "Get Up and Use Me (Version)"
from Hungry Beat (2007) compilation on Acute Records
originally on Lubricate Your Living Room LP (1981)

standard tuning w/ capo on 2nd fret

Note* The overall structure of this song is very much
 like that of James Brown's pioneering Funk material
 of the late 60's and early 70's. There's two guitars
 playing spare funky riffs that call and respond or
 interlock with one another and repeat throughout most
 of the song, only with occasional variations. Then a
 bridge is featured somewhere in the middle of the song
 and serves as the only change. The Contortions and
 James Chance/White also use this template quite often
 so it helps to be familiar with it when attempting to
 play this song.

Guitar 1 main riff
e|--------------------------------------------||
B|------------------------------------3-(3)-3-||
G|-6-----6--4--3------6---6--0--0--3-----3----||
D|--------------------------------------------||
A|--------------------------------------------||
E|--------------------------------------------||
alternately played like this every other measure
 or so, slight improvisation with pattern is key.
e|--------------------------------------------||
B|------------------------------------3-(3)-3-||
G|-6--6--6--4--3h4p3--6---6--0--0--3-----3----||
D|--------------------------------------------||
A|--------------------------------------------||
E|--------------------------------------------||

Guitar 1's main riff variant played once every
 third measure or so during verses. Listen to
 song for the pattern.
e|---------------------------------------------|
B|-------------------------------------4--4--4-|
G|-7------7--0--4------7---7--7--0--4----------|
D|---------------------------------------------|
A|---------------------------------------------|
E|---------------------------------------------|

Guitar 2 main riff, this riff drops out more often
 in order to play the skronk freakout leads, so
 listen for the pattern.
e|--------------------------------------------||
B|------------------------------------3-------||
G|-0-----0--4--3------0---0--0--0--3--------0-||
D|--------------------------------------------||
A|--------------------------------------------||
E|--------------------------------------------||

Guitar 2's skronk freakout leads are based around
 these chords and simultaneous use of the whammy
 bar while picking them, but there's heavy improvisation
 so just play along, listen, and make your own
 interpretation.
e|--------------------------------------------|
B|-13---13-13--------------------13-13-13-13--|
G|-13---13-13-13---13-15-13---13-13-13-13-13--|
D|------------13---13-15-13---13--------------|
A|--------------------------------------------|
E|--------------------------------------------|

Guitar 1 fill during guitar 2's freakout

G|-/12-12-12-12-12-/12--12-12-12-12--|
D|-----------------------------------|

Rest on D# note during the "chorus" of "so GET UP!...
 use me," except when going into the first guitar
 freakout and then the bridge.
