Capo 3rd fret

Intro
D G D A7 D

Verse 1
D G
Lay me down on the hillside, cover up my eyes
D A7 D
I don't wanna see another shepherd lurking in disguise
                                                      G
Lead his flock back to the slaughter with sugarcoated lies
       C A7 D
Lay me down on the hillside and cover up my eyes

Verse 2
D G
Lay me down on the hillside and cover up my ears
D A7 D
I don't wanna hear the choir prey upon our deepest fears
                                                           G
Or the preachers drink from cisterns loaded full of fallen tears
       C A7 D
Lay me down on the hillside and cover up my ears

Chorus
       G D
Lay me down on the hillside
       C D
Lay me down and walk away
         G D
Leave no roses on my headstone
         C A7
Leave no footprints in the clay
            C G D
Just lay me down and walk away

Verse 3
D G
Lay me down on the hillside and cover up my mouth
   D A7 D
So I can't tell the truth beyond the shadow of a doubt
                                                     G
I don't wanna make a promise just to fail to keep my vows
       C A7 D
Lay me down on the hillside and cover up my mouth

Chorus
       G D
Lay me down on the hillside
       C D
Lay me down and walk away
         G D
Leave no roses on my headstone
         C A7
Leave no footprints in the clay
            C G D
Just lay me down and walk away

Verse 4
D
Lay me down on the hillside, turn away your face
D
And leave no post or marker just to sanctify this place
                                               G
Raise nothing in my honor, it wasn't worth the waste
       C D
Lay me down on the hillside, turn away your face

Chorus
       G D
Lay me down on the hillside
       C D
Lay me down and walk away
         G D
Leave no roses on my headstone
         C A7
Leave no footprints in the clay
       G D
Lay me down on the hillside
        C D
I don't wanna meet this way
       G D
Let me lay there in the darkness
                C A7
You know that's where I wanna stay
            C G D
Just lay me down and walk away
